  • Maine Optometrists are participating in InfantSEE to improve infant eye & vision care. Due to the overwhelming number of children with eye and vision problems across the United States, Maine optometrists are devoting appointments throughout the year to no-cost, comprehensive eye and vision assessments for infants between six and 12 months of age through InfantSEE®.   • Augusta Olympian Julia Clukey is partnering with the Kennebec Valley YMCA to host a new 10 day summer camp in Maine starting in June. The camp is designed for girls ages 8-11 as a place to develop self-confidence and a healthy lifestyle. The camp will feature a wide range of activities including swimming, kayaking, hiking, nature walks, field sports, arts and crafts, theater, and music. Each day of camp time will also include “log time” with Julia, where campers will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of educational topics. FMI

  • Do you need scholarship money, value excellence, enjoy a challenge, demonstrate leadership, value community service, and/or want to grow personally and professionally? Then the Miss Maine Scholarship Program is for you! The Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant is the official state preliminary to the Miss America Pageant, the largest source of scholarships for women in the world.Deadline for participation is March 1, 2012.   • February 21- March 23, 3:00-4:00 p.m. Kennebec Valley YMCA Special Olympics Swim Team. Returning this winter, the Special Olympics Swim team will be parcticing twice a week for five weeks. Participants will learn basic competitive swimming skills in preparation for the state swim meet in April. All practices will take place under the supervision of certified Special Olympics coaches.   • A chimney fire has left a family homeless for Christmas in Somerville. Mike Dostie, fire chief of the Somerville Fire Department, said Jeremy McGinnis and his family resided in the single-wide mobile home at 70 Hewitt Road. Monetary donations are being accepted at any TD Bank. Anyone who is willing to help may call or text for more info: 441-6708.

  • Maine's artist and farming communities are vibrant, idealistic groups, both key to our state's unique sense of place. The Harlow Gallery is looking for ten Maine artists with ten CSA farmers in central Maine and asking them to get to know each other well over the course of the 2012 growing season. The application deadline is Feb 1. The ten selected artists will create art inspired by their farmers' lives, work, landscapes, challenges and ideals. The resulting work by all ten artists will be exhibited at the Harlow Gallery in October 2012.FMI: 622-3813

  • Maine DOT Traffic Alert: I-95 bridges between Fairfield and Benton will be under reconstruction. This will affect Interstate 95 in both directions: between Exit 133 US 201 and Exit 138 Hinckley Road until November 29, 2013. FMI

  • It is a law in Maine that compact fluorescent lamps, CFL's need to be recyled, but not in curbside recycling. Waste fluorescent bulbs need to be recycled. For consumers there are two convenient ways to recycle waste fluorescent bulbs. FMI

  • The Meals on Wheels Association of America supports Spectrum Generations new senior nutrition program "We Sustain Maine – healthier meals prepared with Maine grown foods." You too can help. Donate or volunteer so no senior goes hungry. FMI; 1-800-639-1553

  • Syntiro, a non-profit in Readfield, is offering a new, federally funded program to help people who have worked in agriculture or the logging industry earn their GED, find a better job or go to college or enter the military. The Maine HEP program offers opportunities to attend cultural events, develop leadership skills, job training skills and mentoring. FMI: 522-2315

  • Portland Veterans' Acupuncture Clinic, as of August 16, PVAC will be changing the location of their Tuesday night, 6pm-8pm clinics to Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh, 76 Noyes Street, Portland from Williston West Church. PVAC provides free, community-style acupuncture treatment to veterans of any military service and their immediate families. FMI:828-1799

  • Pine Cone Reelers Square Dance Club of Augusta will have workshops for Mainstream thu A-1 Thurssday evenings druing the 2011-2012 school year. This wil happen at the Lincoln School in Augusta ( just of Western Ave.) On days there is no school scheduled or school is canceled there will be no workshops as well. 6-6:45 p is the A-1 and 6:46-8:45 is Alternating Mainstream and Plus.   • Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic Now Offers Free Transport from Bangor, Waterville and Augusta. Many people in Maine cannot afford to spay or neuter their pets, but central Maine now has more and more affordable spay/neuter options. The Community Spay/Neuter Clinic in Freeport now offers affordable low cost spay/neuter surgeries with free van transport from Bangor, Waterville and Augusta. The clinic is a state-of-the-art Humane Alliance Model spay/neuter clinic. It is devoted to ending pet overpopulation through spay/neuter. The clinic veterinarians have special training in pediatric spay/neuter meaning they can spay and neuter cats and dogs as young as eight weeks old. FMI: 865-0772

  • Maine health officials have an new online tool where residents can learn more about the federal health care reform law passed. FMI

  • Receive the Harold Alfond College Challenge Grant for Maine babies under one year of age. They are eligible for a $500 grant from the Alfond Scholarship Foundation to start a NextGen College Investing Plan® (NextGen®) account.   • Adult Grief Support Groups at the Hospice Volunteers Community Center, Main Street in Waterville. HVWA offers 4 ongoing adult grief support groups for people whose loved one has died. There is a Widow's Group that meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, a Widow and Widower's Group that meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 10:00am to 12:00 noon, a Men's Grief Group that meets the 3rd Monday of each month from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and a Women's Grief group that meets the 3rd Monday of each month from 6:00 to 8:00pm.   • Pet Food Pantry in Fairfield distributes free pet food and supplies on the second Friday of each month at Pleasant Street Methodist Church, 61 Pleasant Street Waterville, Maine. . Distribution time is from 2 to 4 p.m. The pet pantry is always looking for donations and volunteers. FMI

  • The next time you are behind the wheel, make sure your tires are road ready. Proper tire care helps to keep you safe and saves money. When your tires are properly inflated, you can save 8 cents a gallon at the pump! Check your tire pressure every month and before long trips. FMI

  • Augusta Spiritualist Church, corner of Court and Perham St, Augusta, the first Thursday of every month features Psychic/Mediums giving mini readings. FMI: 582-6745 or 622-8980

  • Become a mentor to High School students. This a Cony/Cynergy Collaborative program. Each Cynergy volunteer will be assigned to their own small classroom of students, and meetings are held once a month for approximately 30 minutes. Cynergy is a division of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce. FMI: 622-5801

  • The Harlow Gallery is owned, directed and supported by the Kennebec Valley Art Association, which supports the artistic development of its' member artists, both amateur and professional, by providing opportunities for exhibition and other professional development at the Harlow Gallery. These include workshops, lectures, demonstrations and other special events. Check out all the Harllow Gallery is doing in the Kennebec Valley. FMI: 622-3813

  • The Farmingdale Historical Society will be holding a monthly open house every third Tuesday of the month at the Gardiner Public Library, 5:30p-7:30pm. FMI
